Restorative Yoga Program

We are thrilled to receive a Do Good Grant for Restorative Yoga at the San Luis Obispo County Jail.

Since we received the 30 new yoga mats for the men and women practicing at the SLO County Jail, we also began offering two new classes, one class for men, one for women.

To give you a glimpse:
One class is in the men’s maximum security unit. They have never had the opportunity to do yoga and meditation in this space. It is a first ever!  For the past month, we have had 16-18 men practicing alongside two volunteer instructors each Wednesday. Now, there are enough mats for all who are interested in practicing.

One young man in particular, has attended every class. He practices in the back. He is quiet, focused and graceful. His grace is coupled with a striking appearance. He approached the volunteer instructor at the end of class last week, asking: “Is there anywhere that I can keep doing this when I get out?” and with a look of surprise and calm added: “I feel less angry.”

The 30 mats are supporting double the amount of use, gratitude and growth with the introduction of these new classes. The mats are the resources needed to continue offering these beneficial opportunities for mind,

body and emotional transformation to those who were already practicing with us, and those who have been asking to join the movement.

One definition of “Yoga” is union. The mats allow inmates to connect to each other and outside community members, and allow individuals to get in touch with themselves.  This whole process is very transformational. The divine light in the men and women inmates and volunteers see and honor the divine light in Do Good Grants.

We are very grateful
